Zana

Zana is a Serbian pop and rock band from Belgrade. Guitarist Radovan Jovićević and keyboard player Zoran Živanović "Kikamac" had played together in school bands since 1976, and when Jovićević's girlfriend Zana Nimani began singing with them, the band took her name in 1979. Lyricist Marina Tucaković joined after hearing them at Radio Belgrade's Studio VI and went on writing their words long after she stopped being a member.

Zana's first single, "Nastavnice", came out in 1980, and that November they played their first concert, opening for Generacija 5 at Belgrade's Pionir Hall. In 1981 came the debut album "Loše vesti uz rege za pivsku flašu" and the reggae-tinged summer single "Leto", and the band opened for Bijelo Dugme at a concert in Sarajevo. "Dodirni mi kolena" (1982) and "Natrag na voz" (1983) were both recorded in Sweden with producer Tini Varga, and 1983 also brought "Mladiću moj" and "Jabuke i vino", a duet with Željko Bebek.

Zana Nimani left in 1984, made one solo album, "Noćas pevam samo tebi" (1986), and retired to Canada. Nataša Gajović sang with the band from 1985 to 1989, on albums such as "Zana" (1985), "Otkinimo noćas zajedno" (1987), with "Vejte snegovi", and "Vojna pošta" (1988), with guests including Tifa and Laza Ristovski. Nataša Živković followed on "Rukuju se, rukuju" (1989), where Dragana Mirković sang on "E, moj doktore".

From 1991 Jelena Galonić was the voice of Zana, a pop trio at first, with "Nisam, nisam (Devojka tvoga druga)" (1991) and "Priča se, priča" (1993), and albums up to "Kao nekad" (2006). Jovićević moved to the United States in 1999, and Živanović and Galonić, married in 2008, carried on. The band marked 30 years at Sava Centar in 2010 and has played with a full line-up again since 2015.

"Mladiću moj" was ranked 54th on B92's 2006 list of the 100 best domestic songs. Tereza Kesovija recorded "Dodirni mi kolena" in French in 1983, and Severina covered it in 1999.
