About Stampedo
Stampedo is a cabaret-minded band from Zagreb, formed in 1995 around Javor Jeić, who wrote the music and lyrics for its first three albums, and the singer Ivanka Mazurkijević. Their pop rock takes in mambo, swing, samba, tango, ska and Afro pop as well as Dalmatian, French and Macedonian chanson, and by the band's own account about thirty musicians and many guests have played with it over the years.
Ivanka Mazurkijević was born on 7 December 1971 in Tettnang, Germany. She trained in Bohemian studies and museology and started making music in Berlin with the group La Folee before Stampedo, which was where her stage career in Croatia began. She has also sung in the project Mile i putnici, with the album "U dva oka".
In 1996 the video for the band's promo single, "Tutico", won the Oktavijan award at the Croatian Film Festival. The debut album, "Cirkus Stampedo u predstavi Tandara Mandara", came out in 1998, and in 1999 Stampedo received the Crni mačić award and a Porin nomination for alternative album of the year. In 2001 the Japanese label Ondo Records released the first album in Japan. "Romantično ljetovanje za dvije (2) osobe" followed in 2000, with "Sayonara", which the band entered for Dora, the Croatian Eurovision selection, and "Pau Pau" in 2002, with "Plaža snova". Among their other songs is "Jadranska sol".
By the fourth album, "Možda stvarno", released on Aquarius Records in 2008 and announced with the single "Snijeg", the line-up had changed: Ivanka on vocals with Stanko Kovačić, Nikola Crnković, Dalibor Zovko and Romana Mlinarić, while Jeić had stepped back from playing but stayed a member. Ivanka Mazurkijević has since written music for more than 30 plays and a dozen films, many with director Paolo Magelli, and won a Porin for the children's album "Kišni razdraganci" made with Damir Martinović Mrle. In 2019 she said Stampedo was still working.
