About Alen Slavica

Alen Slavica is a Croatian pop singer and songwriter from Karlovac, born on 23 December 1964. He is known above all for romantic love songs, and in the 1980s he was one of the popular young singers of the former Yugoslavia.

He started early. At thirteen he won first place at the Prvi glas Karlovca contest in his home town, and his first two albums, Alen 1 and Alen 2, followed when he was sixteen and seventeen. Over the years he performed at many festivals, among them the Split festival, the Zagreb festival and the World Friends Festival in San Diego.

His biggest hit is "Dao sam ti dušu", the title song of his 1989 album, which sold around 100,000 copies. Other well-known songs are "Ispod tvoga jastuka", "S tobom sam našao sreću" and "Snježana". In 1989 he was invited to sing on New Year's Eve in Canada and toured there with Kićo Slabinac. Two months after coming home he went back to Canada, where he recorded "Ti si moja sretna zvijezda" and "Pod krilima neba", and for the next eleven years he lived between Canada and Croatia.

His return to the stage came in 2006 at the Dalmatinska šansona festival. For many years he has lived in Los Angeles, where he has played instrumental music in an Italian restaurant, worked at Guitar Center in Hollywood and sold studio equipment and microphones in southern California. In 2014 he published his autobiography, Životni autoput, dedicated to his daughter Ema. He is married to the textile designer Sandra Dedić Slavica, daughter of the songwriter Arsen Dedić.

Alen Slavica records for Croatia Records, usually two singles a year, and has written music for other Croatian singers. Before the pandemic he toured Australia and New Zealand three years in a row and played in Canada, Florida and Chicago. In June 2021 he marked forty years of his career with a concert in Karlovac, where he premiered "Karlovačke kiše", a ballad about his home town sung with Gabi Novak, with Matija Dedić on piano. At that concert Croatia Records presented him with a platinum award for Dao sam ti dušu.
