About Parni Valjak

Parni Valjak is a Croatian rock band, formed in Zagreb on 29 November 1975 by Husein Hasanefendić "Hus" and Jurica Pađen, both former guitarists of Grupa 220, with their manager Vladimir Mihaljek. The first line-up was completed by singer Aki Rahimovski, bassist Zlatko Miksić "Fuma" and drummer Srećko Antonioli.

Their debut, the concept album Dođite na show! (1976, PGP-RTB), was followed by Glavom kroz zid (1977). Pađen then left to form Aerodrom, and Branimir Štulić played with the band briefly before reviving Azra. After a break in 1978, when Hasanefendić and Rahimovski were called up to the army, they recorded Gradske priče (1979) in Milan, a step towards new wave that included "Stranica dnevnika". In 1980 they released an English-language album, City Kids, as Steam Roller, and Vruće igre, with "Neda", "Javi se" and "Hvala ti", which took them to the top of the Yugoslav rock scene.

Vrijeme je na našoj strani (1981), the live album Koncert (1982), Glavnom ulicom (1983) and Uhvati ritam (1984), whose title song was a big hit, followed. Anđeli se dosađuju? (1987) brought "Jesen u meni". After a free concert on Zagreb's Republic Square in May 1988 the band paused, then returned with new members on Sjaj u očima (1989), with the ballad "Moja je pjesma lagana", Lovci snova (1990) and the triple live album Svih 15 godina (1991).

Buđenje (1993), with "Sve još miriše na nju", won the Porin for album of the year, one of seven Porins the band took at that ceremony. The unplugged Bez struje – Live in ZeKaeM (1995), Samo snovi teku uzvodno (1997), Zastave (2000) and Pretežno sunčano? (2004) followed, and on New Year's Eve 2005, after a 30th anniversary concert on Ban Jelačić Square, the members announced that they were splitting up.

Parni Valjak reunited in 2009, with guitarist Marijan Brkić, formerly of Prljavo Kazalište, among them. In October 2010 they played two concerts at the Belgrade Arena to about 22,000 people each, in 2015 they received the City of Zagreb Award, and in 2018 they released Vrijeme. Aki Rahimovski died on 22 January 2022 and was posthumously given the Porin for lifetime achievement. Igor Drvenkar then took over as singer, and "Moja glava, moja pravila" went to number one on the HR Top 40.

Anđeli se dosađuju? was ranked 82nd in the 1998 YU 100 list of the best Yugoslav albums. In the Rock Express Top 100 Yugoslav Rock Songs of All Times, voted in 2000 by readers, critics and musicians, "Sve još miriše na nju" was ranked 22nd, "Jesen u meni" 48th, "Stranica dnevnika" 57th and "Hvala ti" 85th.
