About Prljavo Kazalište
Prljavo Kazalište is a rock band from Zagreb, Croatia, formed in the district of Dubrava on 29 November 1977. It grew out of the group Ciferšlus, with singer Davorin Bogović, guitarist Zoran Cvetković "Zok", bassist Nino Hrastek and drummer Tihomir Fileš, joined in 1977 by guitarist Jasenko Houra. The name, "Dirty Theatre", comes from a fictional theatre in the comic Alan Ford. Their early songs were punk rock with socially critical lyrics.
Their first single, with "Televizori", "Majka" and "Moje djetinjstvo", came out on Jugoton in 1978, and the debut album Prljavo kazalište followed on Suzy in 1979, produced by Ivan "Piko" Stančić; the censors labelled it kitsch, which raised its tax. Crno-bijeli svijet (1980) moved towards new wave and ska and brought the hits "Mi plešemo" and "Nove cipele". After Bogović was dropped in 1981, Houra sang on Heroj ulice (1981) himself, and Bogović returned for Korak od sna (1983), with "Sve je lako kad si mlad".
Zlatne godine (1985, Jugoton) introduced the band's new singer, Mladen Bodalec, formerly of Patrola, and a turn to pop rock. Zaustavite Zemlju (1988) included "Mojoj majci", which struck a national chord, and on 17 October 1989 the band played Zagreb's Republic Square, today Ban Jelačić Square, to an estimated 200,000 people. That year guitarist Marijan Brkić left for Parni Valjak. Devedeseta came out in 1990.
The band paused in 1991 because of the war and returned in 1993 with Lupi petama..., which won the Porin for best album. Later albums were S vremena na vrijeme (1996), Dani ponosa i slave (1998), Radio Dubrava (2003), Moj dom je Hrvatska (2005), Tajno ime (2008) and Možda dogodine (2012), and in 2019 the band received the Charter of the Republic of Croatia. In 2022 Houra and Fileš, the last two original members, fell out over the name, and since 2023 two bands have used it: Houra's, fronted by Bodalec, and Fileš's, with Bogović.
Crno-bijeli svijet was ranked 36th in the 1998 YU 100 list of the best Yugoslav albums. In the Rock Express Top 100 Yugoslav Rock Songs of All Times, voted in 2000 by readers, critics and musicians, "Mi plešemo" was ranked 49th, "Crno-bijeli svijet" 74th, "Ma kog me Boga za tebe pitaju" 77th and "Marina" 93rd.
