About Cod

Cod (written COD) was a pop rock band from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, formed in 1972 by Nenad Jurin, Džemal "Džemo" Novaković and Izidor Kajić, all trained musicians. Its English name is a street-slang word for a trick or a hoax. They started out playing hard rock covers of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, gave their first serious concert at Skenderija for the tenth anniversary of Indexi, and until late 1974 worked mostly as a backing band for singers such as Kemal Monteno, Zdravko Čolić and Mahir Paloš.

Their success began when Enes Bajramović joined at the end of 1974. He wrote most of the music and Ranko Boban most of the words, and the first singles, "Dođi mi na čaj" and "Ciciban", set the band's style of catchy pop rock with lyrics for a teenage audience. Steady concert work did not follow, and for a while the members scattered: Jurin to Indexi, Novaković to Neda Ukraden and Bajramović to Ambasadori.

Bajramović came back in late 1976, with Nedžad Čamdžić and Krešimir Rebić now in the band, and the single "Novi štos" was a hit, after which Cod toured the Soviet Union. The debut album, Dođite na čaj, came out on Jugoton in 1977, with a line-up of Bajramović on guitar, Darko Arkus on keyboards, Kajić on bass, Izet Hajdarević "Zoo" on drums and Selver Brdarić on vocals. The second album, Bijeli bagremi (1978), was more ambitious and varied; Bajramović arranged most of it, and its title track was a progressive rock piece by Žarko Šipka, but according to the Bosnian Wikipedia it did not find a real response from the audience.

Singles such as "Ekskurzija" and "Semafor" / "Ja i moja mala" are also part of the band's story, and the last release was "Slušaj me, Majo" backed with "Điha, điha", after which Cod broke up. Petar Kenjić and Ivica Propadalo also played in the band, and Propadalo and guitarist Vedad Hadžiavdić went from Cod to Teška Industrija in 1974. The band's recordings were later collected on Kolekcija hitova and Ekskurzija – izvorne snimke 1975–1980, and among its remembered songs is "Deni".
