About Bombaj Štampa
Bombaj Štampa are a rock band from Sarajevo, founded in 1982 by guitarist Nedim Babović. Their name comes from the slang word "bombati", to tell tall tales. With Zabranjeno Pušenje and Elvis J. Kurtović & His Meteors they helped start the New Primitivism movement, and their sound mixed punk rock and new wave.
At first the band had no stable line-up and played little. In May 1983 Branko Đurić "Đuro", who had sung with SCH, joined as singer and guitarist, and he and Babović went on to write most of the songs. An early hit was the football chant "Željo, to je moj tim", which in 1984 appeared on the compilation Nove nade, nove snage together with "Jogging across Alipašino polje" and "Dole". Đurić's work as an actor limited what the band could do: he was busy with the film Dom za vešanje when their debut album came out.
That album, Bombaj Štampa, was released by Diskoton in 1987, more than a year late, with "Mrak i ja", "Često poželim da sve zaboravim", "Otvorena pjesma Đorđu B." and "Mali motorin". The follow-up, Ja mnogo bolje letim sam (Diskoton, 1990), gave them their biggest hit, "Bolje letim sam". They toured with Top lista nadrealista and played concerts across Yugoslavia. Over the years the line-up included bassist Neno Jeleč, drummers Ademir Volić and Dragan Bajić, and keyboardist Nikša Bratoš, who also played in Valentino and Crvena Jabuka.
The band stopped when the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina began; its last pre-war concert was in Pakrac in 1991. In December 2008 Babović, Bajić and bassist Ernie Mendillo of The Brandos played a reunion concert in Sarajevo, and in 2010 Dallas Records released Neka DJ odmah dole CJ, with "Nedim", a version of Chuck Berry's "Nadine", and "Vriska". In July 2019 Bombaj Štampa played the main square of Zenica at Zenica Summer Fest, presenting the new song "Čekić".
