About Time

Time is a Croatian rock band from Zagreb, founded in November 1971, playing rock and progressive rock. In September 1971 Dado Topić left Korni Grupa and, with manager Vladimir Mihaljek, put the band together: Topić on vocals, Tihomir Pop Asanović on keyboards, Vedran Božić on guitar, Mario Mavrin on bass, Ratko Divjak on drums and Brane Lambert Živković on piano and flute.

The debut album Time came out on Jugoton in 1972, with most songs written by Topić in his Korni Grupa days. The first pressing was only 500 copies, but it sold so well that it was reissued again and again. It holds "Za koji život treba da se rodim", ranked 4th in the Rock Express Top 100 Yugoslav Rock Songs of All Times, a poll of readers, critics and musicians published in 2000, and "Istina mašina", ranked 83rd. The original line-up ended in January 1973, the year of the single "Makedonija", 61st on the list. Drummer Pečo Petej, once of Indexi, joined after graduating in Graz.

Time II (1975) was recorded with Asanović, Divjak and Dragi Jelić of YU Grupa, Topić playing bass. It brought "Alfa Romeo GTA", "Dok ja i moj miš sviramo Jazz" and "Da li znaš da te volim", ranked 29th. Topić had written material for it while jailed in 1974 for evading military service. He also played bass with the English band Foundations, and with Petej and Chris Nicholls he revived Time. The concept album Život u čizmama s visokom petom, recorded in Munich, came out in 1976 with "Rock 'n' roll u Beogradu", ranked 46th.

Time officially ended at the end of 1977, when Petej and Božić became studio musicians. Asanović had also toured with Novi Fosili, and Topić went on to back Zdravko Čolić with Mama Co Co, sing with Smak on "Na Balkanu" and record "Princeza" with Slađana Milošević. In 1998 Topić, Božić and Divjak relaunched Time with young musicians for occasional concerts, and in 2012 the band received the Porin for lifetime achievement.
