About Familija

Familija were a Serbian rock band from Belgrade, a kind of supergroup formed at the end of 1993 that mixed pop rock with ska and ethno. Three of its members came from U škripcu: guitarist Aleksandar "Vasa" Vasiljević, bassist Aleksandar "Luka" Lukić and drummer Ratko Ljubičić. They were joined by singer Dejan "Peja" Pejović, a founder of Vampiri, singer Dejan "Dexy" Petrović and percussionist Goran "Gedža" Redžepi.

Recording of the debut album started in February 1994, and Narodno pozorište came out on PGP-RTS later that year. Pejović, Vasiljević, Lukić and Petrović wrote all the songs, and the producer Đorđe Petrović also played keyboards. The album gave the hits "Baltazar", "Mala, mala", "Što ja volim taj seks" and "Nije mi ništa", while "Trajna Nina" reworked the words of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine". The band also appeared at the New Year's Eve party in Srđan Dragojević's film Dva sata kvalitetnog TV programa.

Ljubičić left in late 1995 and Redžepi early in 1996. In mid-1996 the band released a CD single with "Ringišpil" and the new "Brate Murate", produced by Saša Habić, and in May 1997 the second album, Seljačka buna, with "Brate Murate" and "Paranoja". Petar "Zver" Radmilović played drums in the studio.

Familija broke up early in 1998. Dejan Petrović formed Centrala with his brother Nenad, Pejović started The Dibidus in 2003 with Milan Sarić and Jova Jović, whose 2013 live album includes five Familija songs, and in 2009 Lukić formed Radio Gerila. In 2000 "Mala, mala" appeared on a compilation from the Slovenian label Taped Pictures.

In 2011 "Što ja volim taj seks" was voted among the 60 best songs of the PGP-RTB and PGP-RTS label, and in 2021 Narodno pozorište was ranked 99th among the 100 best Serbian rock albums since the break-up of Yugoslavia in Duško Antonić's book Kako (ni)je propao rokenrol u Srbiji.
