About Novembar
Novembar was a Serbian punk rock band from Niš, formed in 1991 and led by singer and songwriter Goran Kostić "Kosta". It became one of the most prominent bands of the Serbian punk rock scene of the 1990s and 2000s and released five studio albums before Kostić's death in 2017, and a sixth after it.
The band's roots go back to Studeni Studeni from Zagreb, a melodic punk band formed in 1986 that released only the EP Čisto kao suza in 1990 before breaking up. Its frontman, Goran Kostić, moved to Belgrade and in the summer of 1991 to Niš, where he joined the band Glas Amerike. A month later he switched to guitar and the band became Novembar, with Aleksandar Đokić on guitar, Toni Kostadinov on bass and Goran Savić on drums. In 1992 Zoran Ranđelović took over the bass and Zoran Vidaković the drums, and Kostić began working as a music editor at Radio Niš.
The debut album, Deguelo (1994), released on the independent label No Man's Land, was well received by critics. Ekatarina Velika leader Milan Mladenović played the guitar solo on "Gledaj kako ljubav umire", a song from the Studeni Studeni days, and poet Zvonko Karanović wrote the lyrics of "Rođendan". "Irena" appeared on B92's Radio Utopija compilation. Blues južne pruge followed on B92 in early 1997, and Licem prema zemlji in 2000 with a new line-up and guests from Atheist Rap. The band played with KUD Idijoti, Majke and Goblini at the Zgaga festival in Slovenia in 1996.
After a pause, Novembar returned in 2005. The covers album Radulizam (2008) included songs by Šarlo Akrobata, Pankrti, Azra and KBO!, and the fifth album, Proklet, came out in March 2013. In 2016 the band celebrated 25 years at Niš Fortress together with Van Gogh and Galija, and in March 2017 they released "Magla" with Nikola Vranjković of Block Out.
Goran Kostić died of a heart attack in Niš on 30 June 2017, at the age of 51. The final album, Novembar, was released in 2019, with "Sve zaboravljam", the only song finished before his death, and guest vocals by Pero Lovšin, Sejo Sexon of Zabranjeno Pušenje, Vranjković and others. The band said goodbye with a concert at Belgrade's Elektropionir on 19 January 2019. A street in Niš now bears Kostić's name, and in 2021 Deguelo was ranked 16th on a list of the 100 best Serbian albums since the breakup of Yugoslavia.
