About Majke

Majke are a rock band from Vinkovci, formed in 1984 by singer Goran Bare, bassist Nedjeljko Ivković "Kilmister", drummer Željko Mikulić "Korozija" and guitarists Marin Pokrovac and Ivica Duspara, inspired by MC5, The Stooges, the New York Dolls and Motörhead. Their first tape came out in 1988 on Zdenko Franjić's label Slušaj najglasnije. In February 1989 Pokrovac died when the car carrying him home from a rehearsal went into the river Bosut.

With Ivan Dujmić on guitar they released their first album, Razum i bezumlje, in 1990, raw garage rock named rock album of the year. After a break-up Bare gathered a new line-up in Zagreb, with guitarist and main songwriter Zoran Čalić, and Razdor (1993) brought "Budi ponosan", "Krvarim od dosade" and "Mršavi pas"; Milost (1994) followed with "Ja sam budućnost".

Vrijeme je da se krene (1996), their most successful album, turned to a softer blues rock and gave them "Mene ne zanima", "Odvedi me" and "A ti još plačeš"; the video for "Mene ne zanima" won a Porin. The live album Život uživo won a Porin, and Put do srca sunca (1998) brought "Grešnik". In 2000 Bare ended the band and went solo with his group Plaćenici, releasing Izgubljen i nađen (2001), which won the Porin for rock album and carried "Put ka sreći", and 7 (2003).

Majke returned in 2007 as Goran Bare & Majke. Teške boje (2011) swept the Porins, its title song taking song of the year, and Nuspojave (2018) won the Porin for best rock album. Keyboardist Berislav Blažević of Parni valjak and guitarists Damir Trkulja of Gatuzo and Alen Kraljić of Pips, Chips & Videoclips played with them along the way. In 2023 they sold out Arena Zagreb, and in 2024 they played Dingwalls in London.

Goran Bare, born in Vinkovci on 16 August 1965, fell ill on stage in Makarska in September 2026 and died at his home in Zagreb on 9 October 2026, aged 61.
