About Marčelo

Marčelo, born Marko Šelić on 22 January 1983 in Paraćin, is a Serbian rapper, singer and writer, known for socially conscious lyrics and a wide-ranging approach to arrangements. He moved to Belgrade and became one of the most prominent Serbian hip-hop artists, with two Serbian Oscars of Popularity, two Indexi awards and an MTV award to his name.

He started making hip-hop in 1997 and first stood out in 1999 with the demo group Rhyme Animal. In 2002 he signed with Oneya's label Bassivity, and his debut album De Facto (2003) was greeted as the voice of a generation. Its single "Kuća na promaji" dealt with the assassination of the prime minister, police brutality, corruption and alienation, and the album was the first post-war record to bring together new acts from across the former Yugoslavia, among them Edo Maajka and Elemental.

He moved to Multimedia Records in 2005, and his second album Puzzle Shock! topped the charts with "Šarada", "Otkucaji" (with Wikluh Sky), "Pozerište" and "Novi Vavilon". Produced by Dr. Dra, it mixed hip-hop with rock, jazz and funk. He toured it with the Shock! Orchestra, including the EXIT 06 tour of the former Yugoslav countries, backed on stage by Ministar Lingvista, Nensi and DJ Raid, the line-up known as The Filter Crew. Treća strana medalje followed in 2008 and Deca i Sunce, credited to Marčelo & Filteri, in 2010.

In 2012 he released "Čep" for the NGO ASTRA's campaign against human trafficking, and in 2013 he voiced the title role in the Serbian dub of Turbo. The book-album Napet šou (2014) brought "Laž", "Pegla" and "Komplikovani", and he toured it with the jazz band Napeti Quintet. Nojeva varka followed in 2021.

Marčelo is also a writer: the novel Zajedno sami (2008), the story collection O ljudima, psima i mišima, and the Malterego series of novels, whose third book, Intronaut, came out in 2026.
