Severa Gjurin

Severa Gjurin is a Slovenian singer, songwriter and visual artist, born on 4 August 1982 in Ljubljana. Her music mixes jazz, pop and rock. She is the sister of the musician Gal Gjurin, and her father is the linguist Velemir Gjurin. She went to the secondary school for design and photography in Ljubljana and graduated in art education from the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana; she also leads art workshops for children and young people.

She began as the singer of Olivija, the band whose songs were written by her brother, and with it released the albums Med moškim in žensko (2004) and Brez sramu in strahu (2005). She then sang with Vlado Kreslin on his album Cesta, in the duet "Abel in Kajn" (2007), and sang the title song of Metod Pevec's film Hit poletja. Her voice is also in "Take Me to Heaven", a new version of "Srna", in the film Iron Sky. In 2010 she was nominated for Slovenka leta, the Slovenian woman of the year.

Her own songs started with "Mlade oči" (2008), "Kakor da se nič ni zgodilo" (2012) and "Ali je še kaj prostora tam na jugu" (2014). In 2012 she recorded the album Časovne skice with the keyboardist Borut Činč. She has worked a great deal with Gal Gjurin, on symphonic projects too, and with the guitarist Dejan Lapanja, and sang duets with Niet ("Beli prah", "Pod staro jablano"), Jana Sen, Ksenija Jus ("Pusti, naj gre"), Avtomobili ("Daleč", 2016) and Čedahuči. Her tributes include a Bob Dylan project, "Not Dark Yet" (2011), and a homage to Tomaž Pengov.

Her solo debut album, Ali je še kaj prostora?, made with her brother, came out on 1 September 2020, the year of the song "Sonce"; "Lahko noč, skrbi", a duet with Gal Gjurin, had appeared in 2018. She performs with a quartet of Žiga Golob, Dejan Lapanja, Uroš Rakovec and Blaž Celarec, and her concerts at SiTi Teater and the SNG Drama in Ljubljana have sold out for several years.
