About Niet
Niet is a punk rock and hardcore punk band from Ljubljana, formed in 1983 by guitarist Igor Dernovšek, bassist Aleš Češnovar, singer Primož Habič and drummer Tomaž Dimnik. It is counted among the most important groups of the Slovenian punk movement and of punk rock in Yugoslavia.
In January 1984 the band recorded its first songs, "Umiranje", "Srečna mladina", "Zastave" and "Melanholija", with producer Borut Činč, who went on to produce most of their recordings. Their first hit, "Depresija", followed in April, and a set at the Novi rock festival in September 1984 marked their breakthrough. The debut cassette Srečna mladina came out the same year in just 200 copies and is said to be the most copied Slovenian album. Before the year was out they also recorded "Lep dan za smrt", which became their best-known song.
Drummer Tomaž Bergant and second guitarist Robert Likar joined that winter. In 1985 Niet toured France twice, playing two concerts in Paris, and reached the final of the YURM festival in Zagreb. Military service then stopped the band; they regrouped in 1988, recorded "Sam" and "Tvoje oči" with Habič and split that autumn. Primož Habič died in May 1991.
In 1993 Dernovšek formed a new line-up, now singing himself, with Pankrti drummer Slavc Colnarič; it recorded "Bil je maj" and "Ruski vohun" and released the album Niet before breaking up. In 1998 bands including Srečna mladina, named after Niet's first cassette, Zaklonišče prepeva and Zablujena generacija recorded the tribute album Drž'te jih! To niso Niet!!!.
Niet returned on 31 March 2008 with Borut Marolt, formerly of Prisluhnimo tišini, as singer. That December they released Izštekani na Valu 202, recorded live for Jure Longyka's radio show with a string quartet and piano but with their electric guitars, the album in this playlist. The concept album Trinajst followed in 2010, Rokovnjači, music for a theatre production, in 2012, and V bližini ljudi, produced by Žare Pak, in September 2015. Janez Brezigar took over the bass from Češnovar in 2010; Češnovar died in November 2018. After saying goodbye in January 2017, Niet came back to the stage in December 2019 with concerts in Solkan and Kranj.
