About Srce

Srce were a rock band from Ljubljana, Slovenia, founded in 1972 by singer and guitarist Janez Bončina "Benč" after the break-up of The Generals, the group that also gave rise to Time. Bončina had earlier sung and played guitar in Mladi levi. The first line-up had Čarli Novak on bass, Pavle Ristić on drums and Zoran Crnkovič on guitar, who was soon replaced by Marjan Malikovič, formerly of Kameleoni and Faraoni. Braco Doblekar on percussion and Franci Čelhar on Hammond organ completed the band, which was noted for strong vocal harmonies and for playing only its own songs.

At the Slovenska popevka festival of 1972 Srce sang "Kakor cvet je tvoj obraz". Their only single, "Gvendolina, kdo je bil?", with "Zlata obala" on the B-side, came out on Helidon that year, with music by Bončina and lyrics by Dušan Velkaverh, and Tomaž Domicelj wrote the words of the B-side. On 20 and 21 April 1973 the band played "Gvendolina" at the BOOM festival in Ljubljana's Hala Tivoli, and it was released on the live album Boom Pop Fest '73.

At Slovenska popevka 1973 Srce sang Bončina's "Spomin", which won him the festival's first award for best debut composer. Bončina later recalled that the producer Nat Kipner heard them play it and took them to London to record an English version of "Gvendolina". In 1974 the band sang "Maj, zlati maj", with music by Bončina and words by Malikovič, winning second prize from the international jury and the silver ring of the magazine Stop. Srce ended that same year.

Janez Bončina went on to sing with Karamela, with whom he toured Italy, Germany and the Soviet Union, and in 1975 he formed the jazz rock group September. In the Rock Express Top 100 Yugoslav Rock Songs of All Times, chosen in 2000 by readers, critics and musicians, "Gvendolina, kdo je bil?" was ranked 98th.
