About Perper

Perper is a Montenegrin pop rock band from Cetinje, founded at the end of 1991, and one of the most popular rock bands in Montenegro. It took its name from the perper, the currency Montenegro once used.

The band's first notable appearance was on a television show in November 1991, where it presented "Mir kao peto godišnje doba". It was an anti-war song, written at a time when Montenegro was deeply divided, and although it did not catch on as hoped, it pushed the band towards more serious work. At the end of December they recorded their debut album in Novi Sad, released in 1992, and the second, Bludni snovi, followed in 1993.

The best-known line-up is singer and acoustic guitarist Nikola "Niko" Radunović, guitarist Aleksandar "Popaj" Radunović, drummer Ivan "Mane" Vujović, bassist Momčilo "Zeko" Zeković and keyboardist Mihailo "Mikelanđelo" Ražnatović. Popaj is also a member of the satirical group The Books of Knjige.

Through the 1990s and 2000s Perper released a string of singles: "Godine" (1992), "Još uvijek čekam te" (1997), "Sa dušom od kamena" and "Neđelja" (2000), "Dodir svile" (2004) and "Hrabri sokoli" (2007). A compilation came out in 1998, and the live album Perper uživo iz CNP-a captured a concert at the Montenegrin National Theatre. The studio albums Iz dana u dan (2002) and Tragovi (2008) followed, released on Goraton and the band's own Perper Music.

At the Montefon Awards Perper won Group of the Year in 2001, Zeković was named Songwriter of the Year in 2002, and in 2004 the video for "Sa dušom od kamena", directed by Mirko Matović, won Video of the Year.

In 2011 the band released the compilations 20 sporih Perpera and 20 brzih Perpera, in 2012 a concert DVD from the celebration of its 21st anniversary, and in 2015 the single "Niz tvoja leđa". In 2018 the younger Podgorica band NeonoeN covered their "Za laku noć" on RTCG.
