About Dan D
Dan D, Slovene for D-Day, were a rock band from Novo mesto, active from 1996 until their last concert in their home town on 31 December 2025. Along the way they moved from guitar rock to symphonic and acoustic projects and back to a harder sound.
The story starts in early 1992, when singer Tomislav Jovanović - Tokac and drummer Bojan Đorđević - Đoko brought Tokac's friends from Karlovac, Jomi on bass and Tristan Karas - Tičo on guitar, to play the Škrat night club in Novo mesto. As Mercedes Band they mostly played covers; Dušan Obradinović - Obra soon took over the drums, and in 1994 they recorded their first song of their own, "Dobra vila". In 1996 Tokac and Obra brought in Marko Turk - Tučo on rhythm guitar, Primož Špelko on bass and Aleš Bartelj on lead guitar, and Dan D was born.
Their debut Igra came out on Helidon in 1997, with videos for "Bodi moja", "Za naju punca" and "V naravo", followed by Ko hodiš nad oblaki (1999), both produced by Borut Činč. With Andrej Zupančič on bass, Boštjan Grubar on keyboards and producer Žare Pak they made Katere barve je tvoj dan? (2004), the album of the singles "Plešeš", "Čas", "Voda", "Počasi", "Le naprej" and "Roke". Music editors named it album of the year and Dan D band of the year, and "Počasi" won song of the year at the Slovenian radio festival.
With Nikola Sekulović on bass from 2006, they joined Siddharta at the 2007 Viktor awards for a combined "Voda" and "Male roke", which became one of the biggest hits of the year. Ure letenja za ekstravagantne ptice brought "Jutranja", "Google Me", "Love song", "Moj problem" and "Magično", and in September 2009 two sold-out nights at Ljubljana's Križanke with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra became the CD and DVD Dan 202.
They liked surprises: instruments such as spoons, graters and bottles, an unannounced early-morning show at Ljubljana railway station, and the cassette Poleno, packed in a hand-made alder log, ahead of the acoustic Tiho tour and album. "Pozitivne misli" (2014) was one of the most played songs of the year. The double album DNA D (2015) returned to a harder sound and won the Zlata piščal for album of the year; its single "Kozlam" brought in Gregor Skočir of Big Foot Mama, Jernej Dirnbek and Tone Kregar of Mi2, Tomi Meglič and Borut Marolt as Ljudska fronta.
In December 2017 Dan D and Mi2 shared the stage at Ljubljana's Stožice. Milo za drago (2018) came on a USB stick set in a bar of soap, followed by Knjiga pohval in pritožb (2019) and the digital-only Rabim človeka (2025), their last album.
