About Boban i Marko Marković Orkestar
Boban i Marko Marković Orkestar is a Balkan brass band from Vladičin Han in southern Serbia, led by the trumpeter Boban Marković, a Romani musician, and his son Marko. At the Guča trumpet festival, the Dragačevski sabor held every August since 1961, the orchestra has won the most important prizes: the Golden Trumpet, the First Trumpet and the Best Orchestra. Boban won the First Trumpet five times between 1988 and 2001, and the band was named Best Orchestra at the 40th Sabor in August 2000.
Their albums began with Hani Rumba (1997) and Zlatna truba (1998, PGP RTS), followed by Srce cigansko, Millennium and Bistra reka on X Produkcio and Live in Belgrade (2002). The same year Marko joined the band; within two years of touring, at seventeen, he became its main soloist and arranger, and the following records carried both names: Boban i Marko (2003), The Promise (2006) and Go Marko Go! Brass Madness (2007) on Piranha Musik, and Devla (2009) on B92.
The orchestra played on the soundtrack of Emir Kusturica's Underground and in other Balkan films, and stars in the documentary Competition; they also appear in Guča, a documentary about the festival, and in Usti Opre, about Gypsy musicians. Marko played Romeo in Dušan Milić's film Gucha - Distant Trumpet. In 2000 they won the Best concert prize for their show with the violinist Lajko Félix, with whom they had performed since 1999, and they have also worked with the Austrian duo Attwenger and Frank London's Klezmer Brass All Stars.
They have toured from Portugal to Russia and from Israel to Canada, playing at Sziget in Hungary in 2000 in front of 15,000 people. In 2011 they recorded Balkan Brass Battle together with the Romanian Fanfare Ciocărlia, and their best-of, Golden Horns, came out in 2012, followed by Gipsy Manifesto in 2013.
