About Vuka Šeherović

Vuka Šeherović was a folk singer from Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the great interpreters of the sevdalinka between the two world wars. She was called "the woman with the silver voice". She was born Nedeljka Šekerović in 1903 in the village of Kovačići near Zenica, which is why she is on Muzika-Balkan under Bosnia. Her father, Risto Šekerović, was a guard at the Zenica prison.

She sang in her school choir from the age of seven. Her career began in 1919, when at sixteen she won a talent contest in Brčko. She later sang in the bohemian Skadarlija quarter of Belgrade and in her husband's kafana, and appeared on radio, among others on the programme Bosansko veče (Bosnian Evenings). In February 1941 the Sarajevo paper Jugoslovenska pošta, writing about the stars of a Radio Belgrade evening programme, called her the best interpreter of the sevdalinka.

She recorded for Odeon, Polydor and Jugoton. The Serbian Wikipedia names among her songs "U šeheru, kraj bistra Vrbasa", "Oj, kaduno, kono moja", "Bosno moja, moje živovanje", "Sjaj mi jarko sunce sa istoka", "Kad ja pođoh, aman", "Zapjevala bulbul ptica" and "Stojanke, bela Vranjanke". In 1957 Jugoton released a record with her "Oj, kaduno, kono moja", and her "Ja zagrizoh zeleniku jabuku" with the tamburica orchestra of Maksa Popov was later included on the Beograd Disk collection of old recordings Nekad sjale zvezde (1979).

Later in her career she sang with singers of the younger generation such as Zehra Deović. Vuka Šeherović died in 1976 in Serbia. Her recordings were never gathered on one channel, so the playlist here brings together six of her songs, including "Pita nana, što je suknja vrana", dated 1972.
