About Skater
Skater, written SKaTER, is a Slovenian party band founded in 2003 in Maribor. Its music is a mix of narodnozabavna (Slovenian folk-pop), dance, techno and disco, the style often called turbo folk in Slovenia. The band first called itself Skuter, after the German techno group Scooter, and changed its name to Skater in 2007.
It was started by four Maribor DJs, whose first release was a remix of "Mrtva reka" by Marijan Smode; the second song was "Sneg, pada sneg". When two of the founders left, Samo Poštrak (Samcy Jay) and Robert Ribič (Roberto Dee) were joined in 2005 by the singer Katja Lesjak, who was invited soon after she appeared in the second season of the singing show Bodi idol. Comparisons with Atomik Harmonik were brushed aside by the band, which said it followed European dance trends.
The debut album Skuter (2004) was made together with Alfi Nipič and Marijan Smode, and Arrivederci (2005), with the maxi single "Arrivederci Vanč", followed while the band still used its first name. As Skater it released Pridi k meni (2008) on Nika Records and Hands Up !!! (2010) on Zlati zvoki. Ribič left in 2009 and Lesjak in 2013; since 2016 the singer has been Saška Smodej, who replaced Nuša Rojs.
Skater has performed three times at the Melodije morja in sonca festival and has worked with the Maribor producer Dejan Lukman (Dean de Lucca); more recently its music has been made with Saša Lendero and Miha Hercog. Its singles include "Vroče petke", "Bela roža" (a new version of a song by Ansambel Sredenšek), "Raketa", "Dimnikar", "Hands up!!!" with Ansambel bratov Gašperič, "Tralala", "Doktorji za žur", "Ta tamala", "PoKa PoKa", "Al Capone" and "Reševalec". "Ene mene miste" also exists in German as "Gor in dol", and the band's official videos keep coming, from "Malo Morgen" to "Ragadidim".
