Same babe

Same babe is a Slovenian group that mixes folk roots with chanson, jazz, blues, cabaret and rock. It came together in spring 2003 to play at a literary evening dedicated to the poet Janez Menart, and it began as a four-piece acoustic band before growing into a six-member ensemble. The name means "Only Broads", and RTV Slovenija's label describes them as the oddballs of the Slovenian music scene.

Their songs set words to music almost literally, so that the music mirrors the text, with a strong accent on singing in several voices. Their concerts come with a large dose of humour and performance, and their own lyrics take on the small tragicomedies of everyday Slovenian life. Alongside their own songs they play folk songs in their own way and set the work of Slovenian poets to music.

The band has played at all the major ethno and related festivals in Slovenia. The first album, Za ljubi kruhek in njene črne črne lase (Sanje, 2007), was a set of Janez Menart's poems in their settings. Terezijanske (ZKP RTV Slovenija and Sanje, 2011) brought original songs, their own takes on folk songs, and poems by Kajetan Kovič and Frane Milčinski - Ježek. In 2009 they won the Festival slovenskega šansona with their own chanson "Dobri možje", which named the fully original album Dobri možje (Pivec, 2013); critics called it a classic example of alternative chanson.

Their fourth album, Vražji bend (2018), was the band's first electric record, made at the Kramasonik studio in Zagreb, with the singer Maja Predatoria and the poet Ervin Fritz as guests. They have also played twice on Val 202's Unplugged and shared a concert bill with Jani Kovačič at Festival Bled. Viki Baba (vocals, guitar, accordion) writes much of the music and lyrics, with Marko Jelovšek on double bass and guitar, Marko Voljč on trumpet, Miha Nemanič on harmonica, Uroš Buh on percussion and Matjaž Ugovšek Ugo on guitar.
