About Ansambel Toneta Kmetca
Ansambel Toneta Kmetca was a Slovenian narodnozabavna band from Ptuj, founded in 1964 by Tone Kmetec. It played mainly in Štajerska, the region of north-eastern Slovenia.
The band began as the ensemble of Radio Ptuj and later went its own way. At first its singers were Marija Matjašič and Miro Makoter; Marija Vajda Kmetec soon joined and carried on in a duet with Makoter. Many recordings were made in the late 1960s, some of them with the vocal quartet Ormoški fantje. In the mid-1970s Ivan Švajgl took over from Makoter as the male singer.
Around that time the band made its first tour of Canada and the United States. Its concerts at home and in Austria and Germany went so well that it later repeated the tour of America and Canada.
Ansambel Toneta Kmetca stopped performing in the late 1990s, but its recordings are still played on Slovenian radio. Among its best-known songs are "Ljubica, lahko noč", "Na morskem obrežju Marjana", "Ko so fantje proti vasi šli", "Mami, oj mami" and "Stara domačija". Tone Kmetec died in 2011.
