Anja Rupel

Anja Rupel is a Slovenian pop singer, songwriter and radio presenter, born on 19 March 1966 in Ljubljana. She has also worked as a journalist and appeared as a film actress, but she is best known as the voice of the synth-pop band Videosex and for a long solo career.

In spring 1983, still a high school student with no stage experience, she was invited into Videosex by Matjaž Kosi, Iztok Turk and Janez Križaj, together with Nina Sever. The band, founded in Ljubljana in 1982 and regarded as the first teenage band in the country, released its debut single "Moja mama" / "Kako bih volio da si tu" late in 1983. The album Videosex '84 brought the hit "Detektivska priča", Lacrimae Christi (1985) added jazz touches with "Sivi dan", and Svet je zopet mlad (1987) revisited 1960s Slovenian evergreens such as "Zemlja pleše". After Ljubi in sovraži (1991) the band stopped in 1992.

Along the way she sang lead on two Laibach recordings: their version of "Across the Universe" on Let It Be (1988) and "Sympathy for the Devil" (1990).

Her solo career began with Lep je dan in 1994 and Odpri oči in 1995, which won her Zlati petelin awards in 1996 for the album, a video and a cover version; in 1997 she won another as pop singer. Then came Življenje je kot igra (1996), Moje sanje (1997), Ne ustavi me nihče (2000), Vse (2004), Ostani do konca (2009) and Opus (2016), on which she re-recorded "Kako bih volio da si tu" with Davor Gobac.

Anja Rupel has also written lyrics for other singers at festivals such as EMA, Hit festival, Slovenska popevka and Melodije morja in sonca, among them Alenka Godec, Monika Pučelj, Nuška Drašček and Tinkara Kovač. In October 2023 she returned to the stage with "Srce že ve". Her best-known solo songs include "Just Let Go", "Ključ do srca", "Kot da te ni", "Moj planet" and "Na zadnji postaji". She is married to musician Aleš Klinar, and her father is the flautist Fedja Rupel.
