Ana Popović

Ana Popović is a blues singer and guitarist from Serbia, who plays a mix of blues, rock, soul, funk and jazz. She was born on 13 May 1976 in Belgrade, and that is why she is on Muzika-Balkan. She has lived in the United States since 2012: first in Memphis, Tennessee, and a few years later in Los Angeles, California, where she lives today.

Her father, Milton Popović, brought her to the blues, and she started playing the guitar at fifteen. In 1995 in Belgrade she formed the rhythm and blues band Hush with Rade Popović, Milan Sarić and Bojan Ivković. Their first gig was at the club Vox in Belgrade, and after the Marsoni Blues Festival in Senta they were invited to a festival in Hungary. In 1996 she played slide guitar on Dan koji prolazi zauvek by Piloti. Hush played more than 100 shows in 1998 and released the album Hometown on PGP-RTS, with Petar "Pera Joe" Miladinović on harmonica among the guests. That year she went to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar, and the band split up.

In 1999 she formed the Ana Popović Band in the Netherlands. In 2000 she played "Belly Button Window" on the Jimi Hendrix tribute Blue Haze, beside Eric Burdon and Taj Mahal. Her solo debut Hush! (2001), recorded in Memphis with the producer Jim Gaines, did so well that she gave up her studies for the stage. Comfort to the Soul followed in 2003, and Solomon Burke took her on tour as his guest. Ana! Live in Amsterdam came out in 2005.

Still Making History (2007) and Unconditional (2011) both went to number one on the Billboard Blues chart, with Blind for Love (2009) in between. Then came Can You Stand the Heat (2013), the triple album Trilogy (2016) with guests such as Joe Bonamassa, Like It on Top (2018), produced by Keb' Mo', Power (2023) and Dance to the Rhythm (2025). She has been nominated several times at the Blues Music Awards, and in 2003 was the first European nominated for Best New Artist Debut at the W.C. Handy Awards.
