About Melodrom
Melodrom is a Slovenian alternative synthpop band, formed in 1999 at the Slovenian Cinematheque in Ljubljana by three art students and two architecture students. They first called themselves Marquee. The singer is Mina Špiler, with Matevž Kolenc on guitar and programming, Miha Žargi on bass, Matej Nolda on drums and Polona Janežič on keyboards.
Their first project was the soundtrack for a film by Jurij Meden that was never shot; the music was recorded in 2000. Their own career began with a concert at the Gromka club in Metelkova in March 2001. Early on they wrote music for theatre and dance, including the dance pieces of Bara Kolenc, and in 2002 for a fashion show of the Oktober house. Radio Študent played their demos: "Extemporary Ending", known in Slovene as "Pet petnajst", was fourth on the International Crossradio chart of the best singles of 2001, and "Duet" seventh in 2004. They toured Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Serbia and Montenegro.
After signing with Nika Records in 2004 they released their debut album, Melodrom, in September 2004, produced by Jaka Jarc and reworked with Iztok Turk. It was named album of the year 2004 by the magazines Polet and Vikend and the TV show Videospotnice, and an English version came out in 2005. The Guide followed in 2006 and Variacije, a set of remixes, in 2008. Their third studio album, Vse kar si pustila da leži na tleh, was presented in May 2010; it was produced by Zmago Šmon and recorded over nearly two months at the Pavarotti studio in Mostar. The band itself names "Counting Days" and "September" as its two best-known songs.
The members have worked with DJ Umek and the band Rotor. Mina Špiler worked on Laibach's remix of Rammstein's "Ohne Dich", toured with Laibach on the Volk tour from 2006 and sang with them until 2018, and Matevž Kolenc has written and produced music for Laibach too.
