FolkRola

FolkRola is a Slovenian pop band from Koroška (Carinthia), formed in 2000. Its singer and guitarist Samo Javornik writes the lyrics and melodies, which the Slovenian press noted as unusual for a pop band: songs with humour, local colour and lyrics that avoid the usual festival sentiment. The first line-up was Javornik, Drago Repnik, Samir Burzić, Uroš Grögl and Miha Gerold.

The band's debut, Maruška, came out in 2001, and its title song was their entry in the TV contest Orion that year. From then on FolkRola were regulars at almost every Slovenian festival: "Danes" at Slovenska popevka 2001, "Polna luna" at Melodije morja in sonca 2002, "Veter z juga" at Slovenska popevka 2004 and "Stara kitara" there in 2009. At EMA 2003 they played "Ujemi me" with the guest singer Nina, and they returned to EMA in 2007 with "19XX". They were also at home at the Festival narečnih popevk, the festival of songs in dialect, where they sang in Carinthian: "Gra pr'nas na Koroškem" (2002), "Tumasti Ožbi" (2003), "Vse se meja" (2005), "Ambart dečva" (2008) and "Fujtenudl" (2010).

Their second album, Razuzdaj konje (Sreča), was released by Nika Records in February 2004 with twelve original songs. The first single was "Srečo moraš delit", and "Kärnten" painted a humorous, nostalgic portrait of Carinthia and its stubborn people. A video was made for "Franci Korajža", a song with socially minded lyrics. By then FolkRola had made their name as one of the few active Carinthian bands in Slovenian pop. The third album, Nekaj je v zraku, followed in 2009, and the compilation Začaraj jutro in 2017.

Miha Gerold left the band in 2009. In 2017 founding member Samir Burzić, known as Suri, died, and the band stepped away from the stage for a while. FolkRola never officially split, and in 2022 they came back together with the album Mi smo tu, da vas zabavamo, followed by Zadnji refren in 2025. The current line-up is Samo Javornik, Drago Repnik, Tomaž Pačnik, Uroš Grögl and David Novak, and the band has made six music videos.
