About Elizabeth Anka Vajagic

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic is a Canadian singer and guitarist, born in Montreal, Quebec. She is on Muzika-Balkan because German Wikipedia describes her as a Canadian singer and guitarist "with Croatian roots"; the sources do not say more about her family. Montreal is where her music was made: she started playing live there in the mid-1990s and has recorded for the city's independent label Constellation Records.

Her songs sit somewhere between singer-songwriter folk, blues and post-rock. They are mostly built on her voice and guitar, sometimes with violin, harmonium or percussion, and they have been called raw, unpolished and dark. Critics have compared her singing with Patti Smith and PJ Harvey.

After a first EP, Elizabeth Anka, in 2000, she released the album Stand With the Stillness of This Day on Constellation in 2004 and the EP Nostalgia / Pain in 2005. She also appears on the label's 2004 compilation Song of the Silent Land. Her recordings feature Efrim Menuck of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion, Sam Shalabi, and players from Montreal bands such as Molasses, Hrsta and Hangedup.

The playlist here is her Topic channel, with songs such as "Iceland", "Nostalgia", "Pain" and "Sleep With Dried Up Tears".
