Bališ

Bališ are a rock band of Carinthian Slovenes, the Slovenian minority in the Austrian state of Carinthia. They are on Muzika-Balkan because they are a Slovenian band in that sense: RTV Slovenija's music shop calls them "the band of Carinthian Slovenes", and they sing mainly in Slovenian, much of it in the Carinthian dialect of Obir (Ebriach), with some songs in German. The six musicians come from Carinthia and are based there; their 25th-anniversary open-air show, Bališ Arena, was held in Šentjanž v Rožu (St. Johann im Rosental) in June 2025.

The band started around 2000. Its name is an old dialect word from the Obir area for the few belongings that farmhands and maids carried from farm to farm, or for a bride's dowry. The line-up is Norbert on vocals, Dani, Davorin and Rudi on guitars, Izi on bass and Marko on drums; they all play under the band's name, and the singer's own surname is Lipuš.

Their early sound leaned on 1970s hard rock. The 2006 single "Rož, Podjuna, Zila", named after the three Carinthian valleys, featured Vlado Kreslin. The third album, Novnos (2010 in Austria, 2011 in Slovenia), moved to a more emotional modern pop-rock with songs such as "Moj ša la la" and "Črno-bel film". After a farewell concert in Klagenfurt they gave their fans the live album Viže za lajne in harmonij (2000–2014) and took a break.

The EP 11° came out in 2018, produced by Žare Pak, with their version of Georg Danzer's "Daham bleibt daham" as "Ljubo doma, kdor ga ima". In 2024 they released a Carinthian Slovenian "Rock Me Amadeus", which was played on Slovenian national radio. Over the years they have shared stages with Bob Geldof, Siddharta, Big Foot Mama, Peter Lovšin and Hladno pivo.
