Metalsteel

Metalsteel is a heavy metal band from Medvode in Slovenia, founded in 1999 by drummer Alex Škofljanec and guitarists Rok Tomšič and Benjamin Kic. Their lyrics deal with history, women and questions of life, and with a long run of albums they are one of the more active bands on the Slovenian metal scene.

The band counts its real start from 2001, when it first played at the School's Out festival in Medvode, with Kic on vocals, Jaša Bizjak on drums and Matej Sušnik on bass. Later the former drummer Škofljanec took over the vocals, and with him they recorded the five-song demo Metalsteel 1. The song "Novi svet" followed; by then Daša Trampuš had taken over the drums, and the video they made with her brought the band wide attention. They toured Slovenian motorbike gatherings, with a high point in Trbovlje.

The debut album Usoda came out in 2003, and Metalsteel began sharing stages with other Slovenian metal bands such as Sarcasm, Noctiferia, Ophidian and Requiem. In 2004 they presented the video for "Fobia" at a concert in the Medvode cinema. Škofljanec left in 2005, and after a short spell with Žiga Panjan, Benjamin Kic took the microphone again.

The albums Taste the Sin (2005) and the well received Bad in Bed (2007) were followed by Entertainment (2010), This Is Your Revelation (2014), Beyond the Stars (2017) and Forsaken by the Gods (2021). The line-up has been steady for years: Beny Kic on vocals and guitar, Rok Tomšič on guitar, Matej Sušnik on bass and Daša Trampuš on drums.

Their eighth album, Spomenik (Monument), released in May 2023, is a tribute to the Slovenian and Yugoslav heavy bands that shaped them in the 1980s and 1990s. Most of it is covers with guest singers: "Uniformiranci" by Pomaranča, "Action" by Mary Rose, "Manijak" by Šank Rock, "Prepozno je" by Divji Kojoti, "Križarji" by Requiem, "Road Warriors" by Sarcasm and "Moram on" by MASH, closing with the title song.
